Why should you mulch your landscaping beds?

For one thing, a landscaping bed with no ground covering looks unfinished. Laying mulch or rock brings unity to your landscaping and allows your flowers, shrubs, and trees to pop against the ground covering color.

However, mulch is much more than a pretty feature to your landscaping. Additionally, mulch has many added benefits to your landscaping, including:

  • Retains moisture
  • Less necessity to water, weed, or fertilize
  • Provides needed insulation against both cold and hot temperatures
  • Prevents soil from eroding
  • Keeps weeds from growing

Popular varieties of mulch and rock.

In the Western New York area, both rock and mulch are used for business and home landscaping. Some of the region's most popular mulch options are Alabama triple ground mulch, chocolate or ultra black dyed mulch, and hardwood brown mulch. Some of the region's most popular stone are clean crushed Limestone, river rock, and washed stone.

Properly installing ground covers.

Our professionals know the proper thickness and quantities needed for laying your mulch or rock. Generally, mulch is laid at about 2-3" thick. The depth of your stone depends on the size of the stone. Smaller stones, such as pea gravel, can be laid at about 1-2" thick, while river rock should be laid at about 4" to make sure the entire area is covered properly.

Replenishing your ground cover should be done yearly for mulch or bi-yearly for rock.

While rock is expensive initially, it is a better investment in the long run, as it needs to be replaced less frequently.
